Gracie Hankins - Takeover Artist

This month, March, a group of teen artists have taken over the Greenhouse.  Their work is hanging in the shop all month, and unless see tell you you would never know the makers of this art are so young.  As well as having their work all over the shop, they are taking over the Smarty Pants Lectures this month.  Come get to know these beautiful young women and their art!

How old are you, and where do you go to school?

At the moment, I'm 13 years old and I go to Biloxi Junior High School.

How did you get interested in making art/poetry?

I first got interested in art when I was 6 or 7. I was usually a very quiet kid who kept to herself most of the time. But I started going to different summer camps around 6, which included classes at the Ohr/O'Keefe museum of art. that's when I began to get more interested in drawing and painting.

What do you doodle when you are in class?

Typically, I'll draw faces from different angles, or animals. sometimes I'll just do lots of lines connecting until I realize I've nearly covered half of the page.

If you could draw any biscuit, what would it be?

I would draw a little greenhouse biscuit with honey butter on a fruit plate! (my usual at the greenhouse.)

What are you listening to now?

currently, I'm listening to Monster Rally, Mac Demarco, and many other artists. the list goes on.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

I'm really not too sure yet. I'd love to be an artist, but I'd also like to study botany and become a botanist.

What do you think every time you hear that question?  What question should we(you know, the older folks) ask instead?

When I hear that question, a little wave of panic comes over me, because I know I should be thinking about that, but I'm still not sure what I truly would like to do. I'd rather be asked who I aspire to be, and what message I'd like to give to people.

What do you love about yourself?

I love that I am able to view things differently at a young age, and look at the little positive things in life and appreciate them.

How do you want to change the world?

I want to change the world by showing everyone that it really isn't hard to be nice, but it's perfectly fine to have different opinions. I'd like to change how people view other religions, races, sexualities and customs besides their own into a more positive way.
